ICAS/CAS pay tribute to José Juan Pintó Sala
The International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr José Juan Pintó Sala (Barcelona/Spain), CAS arbitrator, at the age of 74.
José Juan (“Jota”) Pintó Sala was an active arbitrator throughout his career at CAS. He was appointed as a CAS arbitrator in 2003 and sat in more than 400 CAS Panels in 23 years of service, mostly in football matters.
He was President of the law firm Pintó Ruiz & Del Valle, based in Barcelona and Madrid, and was one of the pioneers of sports law and sports arbitration in Spain. He was also the first director of the Master in International Sports Law at the Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) in Madrid.
Matthieu Reeb, CAS Director General, said:
“’Jota’ will be remembered for his strong commitment in sports arbitration, and for his enthusiasm, his boundless energy and passion for the resolution of CAS cases until his final moments. He played a significant role at the Tribunal. His huge experience and his fine legal analysis were extremely helpful to our Institution. His wise opinions and advice were always highly regarded. We have lost a great lawyer and a great friend.”
The ICAS President, Mr Michael Lenard, as well as the CAS Director General and CAS staff present their deepest condolences to Mr. Pintó’s family, colleagues and friends.

Le Conseil International de l’Arbitrage en matière de Sport (CIAS) et le Tribunal Arbitral du Sport (TAS) ont été profondément attristés d’apprendre le décès de Me José Juan Pintó Sala (Barcelone/Espagne), arbitre du TAS, à l’âge de 74 ans.
José Juan (« Jota ») Pintó Sala fut un arbitre actif tout au long de sa carrière au TAS. Il a été nommé sur la liste des arbitres du TAS en 2003 et a siégé dans plus de 400 formations arbitrales du TAS au cours de ses 23 années de service, principalement dans des affaires liées au football.
Il a été Président du cabinet d'avocats Pintó Ruiz & Del Valle, basé à Barcelone et à Madrid, et a été l'un des pionniers du droit du sport et de l'arbitrage en matière de sport en Espagne. Il a également été le premier directeur du Master en droit international du sport à l'Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) de Madrid.

« ‘Jota’ a marqué le TAS pour son engagement sans faille en faveur de l’arbitrage en matière de sport, ainsi que pour son enthousiasme, son énergie débordante et sa passion pour la résolution des affaires du TAS jusque dans ses derniers instants. Il a joué un rôle déterminant au sein du Tribunal. Sa grande expérience et ses analyses juridiques pointues ont été d’une aide précieuse pour notre institution. Ses avis et ses conseils avisés ont toujours été très écoutés. Nous avons perdu un grand juriste et un grand ami. »

El Consejo Internacional de Arbitraje del Deporte (CIAS) y el Tribunal Arbitral del Deporte (TAS) han recibido con profunda tristeza la noticia del fallecimiento del Sr. José Juan Pintó Sala (Barcelona, España), árbitro del TAS, a la edad de 74 años.
José Juan («Jota») Pintó Sala fue un árbitro activo durante toda su trayectoria en el TAS. Fue incluido en la lista de árbitros del TAS en 2003 y participó en más de 400 formaciones arbitrales del TAS a lo largo de sus 23 años de servicio, principalmente en asuntos relacionados con el fútbol.
Fue presidente del despacho de abogados Pintó Ruiz & Del Valle, con sede en Barcelona y Madrid, y uno de los pioneros del derecho deportivo y del arbitraje deportivo en España. Asimismo, fue el primer director del Máster en Derecho Internacional del Deporte en el Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía (ISDE) de Madrid.

« A “Jota” se le recordará por su firme compromiso con el arbitraje deportivo, así como por su entusiasmo, su energía inagotable y su pasión por la resolución de los asuntos del TAS hasta sus últimos momentos. Desempeñó un papel determinante dentro del Tribunal. Su enorme experiencia y su excelente análisis jurídico fueron de gran ayuda para nuestra institución. Sus sabias opiniones y consejos siempre fueron muy valorados. Hemos perdido a un gran jurista y a un gran amigo ».
